Sudanese Minister of Guidance and Religious Endowments prohibited construction of new church in the country, saying the government will not issue permits for the building of Christians’ worshiping places.

Shalil Abdullah told the press on Saturday that the existing churches were enough for the small Christian population remaining in Sudan after the secession of South Sudan in 2011, Voice of Peace reported.

Sudan Council of Churches or SCC Secretary-General Bishop Kori Ramli said the minister contradicts the country’s Constitution.

He criticized the recent demolition of the Sudanese Christ Church at El Izba residential area in Khartoum North on July 1.

The Bishop of Sudanese Christ Church Kuwa Shamal Kuku said the demolition was carried out under the pretext of protecting the land.
