United Nations Refugees agency or UNHCR South Sudan representative during the World Refugee Day commemoration on Friday, called for total peace in South Sudan and other parts of the world to avoid suffering and internally displaced persons’ return to their homes.
Cosmas Chanda said over half a million South Sudanese fled to neighbouring countries, representing the biggest population movement in the world, Bakhita Radio reported.
He said they commemorate the World Refugee Day to reflect on the suffering of refugees, causes of conflict and renew political support for people to return home.
Mr Chanda pointed out that while refugees commemorate the Day, about 20 million people in the world are in need of protection and assistance.
He said crises in South Sudan, Nigeria, Syria, Iraq, Ukraine and some parts of the world that cause refugees and IDPs’ problems remain a big challenge to UNHCR.
Women Secretary Rachel Duany said they advocate for peace in South Sudan, urging the government and opposition to stop war for people to return home.
She lamented that they found very difficult living conditions during their visit to IDPs’ camps across the country.
Ms Duany who experienced difficult life of being a refugee when she was child, called on political leaders to work for peace.
