Western Bahr El Ghazal Health Ministry in collaboration with World Health Organization or WHO is mounting efforts on guinea worm surveillance to eradicate the disease.
WHO Guinea Worm Eradication Technical officer Evans Majany Liyosi said they would involve the community in detecting suspected cases through a cash reward program, Voice of Hope reported.
He revealed that the state was prone to guinea worm as it boarders Sudan and Central African Republic where suspected cases were reported last year and that they were putting up strong surveillance.
Mr Evans explained that people who report a guinea worm voluntarily will get cash reward of 500 SSP as one of the surveillance approaches.
He added that health surveillance officers would also work hand in hand with community members to report suspected guinea worm cases.
Mr Evans asserted that many people confused guinea worm with other worms, calling on health surveillance officers to clearly distinguish suspected cases.
South Sudan last year registered 113 guinea worm cases with the highest number in Kapoeta areas of Eastern Equatoria.
