Western Equatoria Agriculture Minister promised to work hand in hand with the new environmental taskforce formed during the two-day Environmental Justice Conference organized by Tombura-Yambio Catholic Diocesan Justice and Peace Commission.
Minister West Yugule stressed the need for a strong mechanism to disseminate information about the environment and natural resources to the local population, Anisa Radio reported.
He added that the implementation of environmental laws is of utmost importance.
Mr Yugule promised to present the resolutions of the conference to the cabinet meeting for discussion and possible implementation.
Vicar General Anthony Bangoye said the church thought wise that to preach peace; it needs a peaceful environment.
State MP Susan Thomas Perembata committed to support the taskforce, pledging to present the resolutions of the conference to the Assembly for debate and attachment to the pending Bill of Environment and Natural resources.
CORDAID representative said research done in Western Equatoria indicated that land disputes and rights were major obstacles facing communities.
The Justice and Peace Commission is operating in Yambio, Maridi, Ezo, Tombura and Nzara Counties hoping that the taskforce would expand their activities to all counties of the state.
