World Health Organization or WHO Medical Officer said cholera cases increased to 670 with 23 deaths as of Monday.

Dr Abdinasir Abubakar told the press on Tuesday that the death rate was 3.4 percent above normal containable rate.

He explained that cholera cases recorded covers Juba Teaching Hospital and Gurei Cholera Treatment Centre.

The Officer added that 13 out of 23 deaths perished in Juba Teaching Hospital and nine died in residential areas.

Dr Abubakar said health partners need to reduce death rates in hospital and communities through establishing widespread case management centres in residential areas.

He called for an increase in surveillance to refer suspected cholera cases to health facilities as quickly as possible.

Dr Abubakar pointed out that the only way to save cholera patients is by rushing them to health facilities for quick treatment.

The officer observed that the main cause of cholera is untreated water and that Juba is at higher risk than other parts because of dense population and poor sanitation.
