Sudanese Public Prosecution charged the former Prime Minister also head of Umma Party Al Sadiq Al Mahdi with undermining constitutional system, deserving death penalty.

In a statement issued by Arabic Network for Human Rights Information, Al Mahdi also faces a charge of calling for violent opposition and criminal force.

The prosecution accused him of disseminating false news, rumours, disturbing public peace and security and distorting state reputation.

The Network condemned serious Sudanese security grip against opposition and press freedom.

It urged the international community concerned with freedoms and democracy to intervene to stop the unprecedented violations taking place in Sudan.

Mr Al Mahdi was detained since May 17 for delivering critical statement through Al Jazeera against Sudanese government, calling for soft revolution.
