United Nations Population Fund or UNFPA estimated that some thirty thousand women in South Sudan are at risk of dying in childbirth due to the escalating conflict.
UNFPA’s Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin in statement on Monday said 200 thousand pregnant women would be in need of urgent care before the end of the year.
He said UNFPA is appealing for 25 million US Dollars to ensure additional reproductive health care and gender-based violence services are set up in South Sudan and affected neighbouring countries.
He said they deployed 33 midwives across the ten states and ensured the safe delivery of 3,500 babies in recent months, but the needs are escalating quickly.
Dr Osotimehin added that ‘Women do not stop getting pregnant or having babies when a disaster strikes.’
The Executive Director is attending a high-level pledging conference for South Sudan in Oslo, organized by the Norwegian government.
