Tonj South Mayor in Warrap State on Monday urged the business community to stop selling using plastic bags in markets to maintain their trading places clean.
Machar Ater gave all traders, restaurants owners, tea sellers and other businesses a seven-day ultimatum to use newspapers for selling things to costumers, Don Bosco Radio reported.
He said the aim of stopping plastic bags in the market was to prevent flies and to stop cattle from dying after feeding on them.
The Mayor advised traders not to keep empty bottle, cartons, plastic sheets and other rubbish in front of their shops.
Mr Ater affirmed that garbage attracts many flies and brings diseases like diarrhoea and cholera.
He advised citizens to use clean water to prevent water borne diseases.
Mr Ater urged police forces to hunt criminals who break traders’ shops and attack people at night.
