African Union or AU Commission Chairperson welcomed the signing of the agreement between President Salva Kiir and the opposition leader Dr Riek Machar in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Saturday.
In a statement on Saturday, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma believes full implementation of the agreement would significantly contribute to the restoration of peace, security and stability in the country.
She urged the two leaders to immediately end fighting and facilitate the full deployment of the IGAD-led Monitoring and Verification Mechanism.
Dr Zuma called for humanitarian access, commencing substantive discussions on the agenda of the negotiations, promote inclusive process and fully cooperate with the AU Commission of Inquiry.
The Chairperson commended President Salva Kiir and Dr Machar for agreeing on critical steps, calling on them to demonstrate the same commitment and leadership in the implementation phase.
The Chairperson hailed Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn and the IGAD Special Envoys for facilitating the agreement and appreciated international partners’ contribution.
She called on the United Nations to extend all the necessary support for the deployment of the IGAD taskforce.
