The government of Canada welcomed the agreement reached by the President of the Republic and the SPLM/A in opposition leader to resolve the crisis, calling on both sides to respect the ceasefire in South Sudan.

In a statement issued by Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird on Sunday urged President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Dr Riek Machar to make every effort to facilitate the delivery of needed humanitarian assistance.

He added that the people of South Sudan fundamentally want to live in peace and safety conditions especially during the planting season.

Mr Baird said Canada fully endorsed last week’s report on recent human rights violations produced by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.

He asured the warring parties that there would be accountability for all atrocities that occurred since December 2013.

Mr Baird told President Kiir and Dr Machar to ensure that there can be no lasting peace settlement or reconciliation in South Sudan without accountability.
