NGOs welcome Ceasefire Agreement, recommit to help victims

Fifty-five major humanitarian NGOs in South Sudan welcomed the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement and reaffirmed their commitment to help all civilian populations in need.
 
The agencies in a statement issued on Saturday called on the conflicting parties to protect civilians, refrain from attacking their areas and distinguish between civilians and combatants.
 
Medair Country Director Caroline Boyd called upon the warring parties to allow unimpeded humanitarian access and ensure the safety and free movement of staff.
 
Save the Children Country Director Alan Paul said violence against aid workers was unacceptable and any restrictions on NGOs hinder provision of assistance to victims.
 
He lamented that at least three aid workers, all South Sudanese nationals were killed since December15. 
 
Mercy Corps Country Director Mathieu Rouquette said NGOs need a chance to provide aid as the rainy season will soon start and transporting supplies would be difficult.
