The Government and the SPLM/A in opposition on Thursday signed Cessation of Hostilities and Status of Detainees Agreements effective within 24 hours.
Chief Negotiator Nhial Deng Nhial signed on behalf of the government and Taban Deng Gai signed on behalf of the opposition.
In the Cessation of Hostilities agreement document obtained by CRN both parties committed to immediate stoppage of military actions.
The agreement calls for progressive withdrawal of forces and armed groups of either side.
It considers the protection of civilians by both parties and humanitarian access to pave a way for rehabilitation.
In the status of detainees’ agreement, International Governmental Authority on Development or IGAD commits to expedite the release of political detainees to participate in an inclusive National Reconciliation Process and dialogue to resolve the crisis.
IGAD Special Envoys Ambassador Seyoum Mesfin, General Lazaro K Sumbeiywo and General Mohammed Ahmed M El Dabi witnessed the ceremony in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
