South Sudanese political parties took to streets in Juba calling for international intervention in the settlement of Abyei issue and referendum conduct.

A representative of the political parties David William Tut from the UDF presented a memo to US embassy in Juba calling for UN General Assembly to endorse the African Union proposal to conduct referendum in October.

He said it was unfair for the international community to watch Abyei issue without intervention.

The parties and civil society organisations demanded that the international community guarantee timely and judicial conduct of the referendum, security and respect for the referendum results.

European Union Political Counsellor Christian Manahl said they were in empathy with the Abyei plight and that they support the AU proposal for referendum.

African Union senior political officer Mashood Isaka said AU remains committed to peaceful settlement of Abyei issue and that he would forward the memo to the AU

Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for action.

The parties also presented memos to UNMISS and National Legislative Assembly.

They said some copies would be supplied to Presidents Kiir, Bashir and the Sudan National Legislature for consideration.
