South Sudan is facing an alarming situation where 16 thousand people contract HIV AIDS annually.
South Sudan AIDS Commission chairperson Esterina Novella Nyilok disclosed the number on Thursday while launching HIV AIDS awareness campaign for World AIDS Day to be commemorated on December 1 under a global theme ‘Getting to Zero.’
She said the burden of HIV epidemic covered all the ten states and the national prevalence rate was estimated at 2.6 percent among adults population.
South Sudan HIV Positive Women chairperson Evelyn Latio called on organizations to assist people living with HIV across the country.
She noted that stigma is still a big problem in the country which affected the formation of associations of people living with HIV in some states.
South Sudan has approximately 150 thousand people infected with HIV AIDs out of 34 million people in the world.
