An opinion poll shows that the country is heading to the wrong direction although some believe that the independence brought positive changes.

International Republican Institute announced that citizens cited bad governance, insecurity and food insecurity in a national poll, Bakhita Radio reported.

The survey focused on environment, economy, service delivery, and attitudes towards government, peace and security, attitudes towards women, constitutional issues and perceptions of political parities.

The poll indicated that 68 percent support the SPLM and 71 percent said President Salva Kiir was a good leader.

SUDeMop Secretary Merekaje Lona said all the indicators show the reality which the government needs to recognize and address.

Juba University student Ohide Wilfred agreed with the survey, citing food shortage and rampant insecurity as difficulties facing the country.

Information Deputy Minister Atem Yak Atem admitted that the Government needs to address the cited challenges.

He said South Sudanese had high expectations after the independence.

This is the second national public opinion poll in South Sudan.

The first nationwide poll was conducted in 2011.

By far citizens’ impression on governance and leadership went down.

2,533 South Sudanese above 17 years old participated in the poll.

49 percent of the participants had little or no education, 28 percent had primary education, 16 percent secondary education and two percent are University graduates.
