Aid workers were able to reach some 25,000 civilians who took to the bush following fresh fighting near Dorein and Labrab villages of Pibor County.

UN Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan, Toby Lanzer, said in a statement issued on Thursday that a joint aid team is providing ‘medical assistance, water purification tablets and plastic sheeting to civilians’, mostly women and children.

The joint team is made up of humanitarian workers from aid and UN agencies and non-governmental organizations.

Mr Lanzer said ‘civilians stranded in the bush need not only peace and security, but also freedom of movement so that they can access services in towns such as Boma, Gumuruk and Pibor.’

He explained that the emergency response mounted this week in Pibor County added to ongoing programmes in Akobo, Bor and Pochalla of Jonglei State.
