A lobby group that kept South Sudan in the agenda of the US administration for the last 20 years wrote to the President of the Republic expressing concern over the ‘perilous’ situation in the country.

Roger Winter, Eric Reeves, John Prendergast and Ted Dagne call themselves ‘longstanding friends who have committed more than two decades of our lives to the great cause of a just peace for the people of South Sudan.’

On Monday, they wrote to Salva Kiir Mayardit to express their ‘concerns about the
increasingly perilous fate of South Sudan.’

‘ From our various vantages, we have all come to conclude that without significant changes and reform, your country may slide toward instability, conflict and a
protracted governance crisis’, they wrote.

They ask for an immediate commitment to re-shape ‘a dangerous and
crisis-filled future for South Sudan.’

The four pro-South Sudan activists advocated the removal of key personnel ‘who
have enabled corruption and crimes against civilians to go unpunished’ from the Ministry of Justice.

They urged that senior army officials guilty of attacks on civilians to be severely punished and alleged human rights abuses fully investigated and prosecuted.

They asked President Kiir to prioritise the construction of oil infrastructure, schools, medical services, clean water and roads.
