Members of the National Legislative Assembly summoned one Governor and five national ministers to address the issue of security for lawmakers.
MP Anne Lino Wuor Abyei tabled on Wednesday an ‘Urgent Motion on Ensuring Security to the Honourable Members of the National Legislature and State Assemblies.’
Ms Wuor narrated the case of MP John Badeng who was beaten and detained on June 25 by escort guards of Central Equatoria Governor’s security.
She decried that security organs are not respecting the immunity granted by the Transitional Constitution to MPs.
Ms Wuor said women were the most vulnerable group to harassment by security operatives.
Three women MPs narrated their own horror stories at the hands of security personnel, including police and military personnel.
MP Peter Bashir Gbandi said the problem of insecurity and harassment was affecting all levels of society.
He added that it was time for the rule of law to prevail in South Sudan and the House should find a solution for the issue of insecurity.
The MPs voted a motion calling Governor Clement Wani Konga and the national ministers of Interior, Security, Defence, Cabinet and Presidential Affairs to appear before the House on Monday to ‘provide a way out’ for ensuring security to MPs.
