The International Funds Corporation or IFC on Tuesday brought together mobile operators, commercial banks, Bank of South Sudan, telecommunications and other line ministries to understand the potential of developing mobile money services in the country.
IFC Information Communication Technology specialist Tim Kelly told reporters that the stakeholders were brought together to understand the potential of developed mobile services, Bakhita Radio reported.Mr Kelly said 16 million people use mobile money services in Kenya.
He added that with the experience learned from Kenya, South Sudan can also develop an effective mobile money service.
Mr Kelly said the main four mobile operators in South Sudan were brought together with Safaricom of Kenya to learn from its experience.
He said in South Sudan people only transfer airtime credit but they can transfer money with their mobiles.
Mr Kelly said the IFC is going to collaborate with banks to make sure that the mobile operators set up a network of agencies in the rural areas for people to send and received money through mobile money services.
He added that IFC set two million US dollars aside for the mobile application project and in particular for mobile money transfer.
