A development organisation on Friday launched a project to build 330 community schools for girls to help fight the high rate of female illiteracy in the country.

BRAC Country Representative Mohamed Abu Bakar said the organization started operating in 2006.

It supports poor women, men and children with education, health, microfinance, agriculture, livelihood and development programs designed to bring positive change in their lives.

Mr Abu Bakar added that BRAC is employs more than 1,880 South Sudanese as full time and part time staff.

Director General for Alternative Education in the national Ministry of General Education and Instruction Kuol Atem Bol said the 330 community schools for girls will help disadvantage girls to get a second chance at schooling.

He added that community girls schools are part of the program of alternative education.

General Education Minister Joseph Ukel announced that his ministry will provide the textbooks for the schools run by BRAC.

He said the program was called adult education but it was renamed alternative education because it included young people who missed or dropped out of school.
