Eastern Equatoria High Court sentenced a woman to five years in prison for child abduction.
Ann Rose, a 52-year old Kenyan national, will spend five years at Torit County prison for having abducted a newborn from Torit Civil Hospital in January, Radio Emmanuel reported.The Court acquitted 27-year old Ms Cecilia, who was employed to nurse the stolen baby.
Torit County Prison Director Anthony Lemi Mimbe confirmed to the press that he received a charge sheet from the Court indicating Ms Rose’s five years sentence.
Ms Rose was convicted of child abduction and kidnapping in accordance to Section 272 of the Penal Code.
She was arrested in Owinykibul on February 23, one month after stealing a newborn baby from the hospital in Torit.
She dressed in nurse uniform to enter the hospital.
The baby was recovered through the efforts of security operatives when the woman was attempting to smuggle it to Kenya via Uganda.
Eastern Equatoria Commissioner of Police Henry Odu said a chief of Owinykibul helped the security to recover the baby.
He added that the baby was in a miserable condition, feeding on pumpkin soup and wrapped only in one towel.
