Police in Tonj South County, Warrap State, have confirmed the death of a 12-year-old girl in an apparent suicide following a family dispute over allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct involving a 5-year-old boy.
Speaking to Don Bosco Radio, the Police Crime Investigation Officer in Tonj South County, Daniel Madit Koor, said officers received a report of the incident at around 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4, in the Agot-toch residential area of Tonj Town.
Madit said police responded to the scene and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death.
According to the investigator, preliminary findings indicate that the incident followed allegations that the girl had engaged in inappropriate sexual behaviour involving a 5-year-old boy near her home.
Madit said investigators established that the girl’s elder brother reportedly found her with the younger child and confronted her over the alleged incident. He said the family altercation is among the issues being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
The police officer appealed to the family to remain calm and avoid actions that could deepen divisions, stressing the importance of forgiveness and dialogue during difficult situations.
Madit also urged the public to handle sensitive family matters responsibly and to seek appropriate support from relevant authorities whenever such incidents arise, rather than resorting to violence or other harmful responses.
