Learning at Henry Bagho Nursery and Primary School in Upuo Boma, Lafon County, Eastern Equatoria State, has been suspended indefinitely after several learners fainted and others fell ill due to severe hunger.
The school’s administrator, John Ukuk Faustino Arang, told Radio Emmanuel 89 FM that the decision was made last week following repeated incidents in which pupils collapsed during lessons because they had not eaten.
The hunger situation has also forced some families to leave their homes. Upuo Boma Chief John Ugwera said a number of households have migrated to other areas in search of food and better means of survival.
Henry Bagho Nursery and Primary School has an enrollment of about 300 learners, including 200 nursery pupils and 100 pupils in Primary One to Primary Three.
The suspension of classes highlights the growing humanitarian challenges facing communities in Lafon County, where food insecurity is disrupting education and forcing families to seek assistance elsewhere. Authorities and humanitarian organizations are being urged to intervene to address the worsening hunger crisis and enable children to return to school safely.
