The United Kingdom has announced a £500,000 contribution to support Ebola preparedness efforts in South Sudan amid growing concerns over the country’s high risk of a potential outbreak.
The funding, which will be channeled through the World Health Organization (WHO) in South Sudan, is aimed at strengthening early detection systems, protecting frontline health workers, improving safe case management, and enhancing rapid emergency response mechanisms.
Health experts warn that an Ebola outbreak in South Sudan could have devastating humanitarian and public health consequences due to existing challenges within the healthcare system and the country’s porous borders with neighboring states affected by disease outbreaks.
The UK emphasized that urgent and coordinated action is needed to strengthen preparedness measures and save lives before any potential spread of the virus.
WHO and health partners continue to work closely with the South Sudanese government to reinforce surveillance, emergency response capacity, and public awareness campaigns across high-risk areas.
