Security operatives in Tonj South County apprehended a woman late last night carrying 1,227 rounds of ammunition concealed in bags mixed with dura (sorghum grain).
The suspect, identified as Aguer Akuer, was traveling by bus and was arrested at Alol checkpoint in Tonj town around 10:30 PM.
According to Aguer, the bullets were given to her by a man who owed her four million South Sudanese Pounds. She told Don Bosco Radio that the man had instructed her to deliver the ammunition to a police officer residing in Maper, Rumbek, who would then buy the bullets and pay her share.
Authorities confirmed that the bullets were confiscated. In her possession, security also found an unspecified amount of money, a knife, a packet of biscuits, and perfume.
Tonj South County Commissioner John Ayititiak Warwien commended the night patrol for their vigilance, saying the operation helped prevent a potential tragedy.

“The commissioner expressed surprise to see a woman involved in such activities.”
The commissioner noted that the woman remains under thorough investigation to identify those behind the supply and distribution of the bullets.
This is the second ammunition smuggling case intercepted in Tonj South this year. Two months ago, security personnel stopped a young man traveling from Wau on a motorbike carrying boxes of bullets. He was injured during a pursuit in the Makuei area before confessing he was transporting the ammunition to Biemnhom.
