Butchers in Magwi town are appealing to local authorities and development partners to construct a modern slaughterhouse to ensure meat safety and public hygiene.

Taban Masimino Inyasio, head of the butchers’ association, revealed that the town has had no proper slaughterhouse since its establishment. Currently, meat is sold in an open structure originally built for vegetable vendors.

“After selling, the area is left open to dogs, animals, and even children playing. It’s not a hygienic or safe environment for meat.”

Taban added that the lack of a designated slaughter facility has led to conflicts, as butchers are forced to move from one location to another in the community to conduct slaughtering.

He called on the government and its partners to either construct a new modern slaughterhouse or upgrade the current facility into a proper meat market with sanitary standards.
