The South Sudan men’s basketball team returned home from the Paris 2024 Olympics after making history in their first-ever Olympic appearance. The team which made its Olympic debut was celebrated by thousands of fans upon their return.

Their debut was marked by an impressive victory over Puerto Rico with a score of 90-79, making them the first team from South Sudan to win an Olympic basketball game.

The team was led by Carlik Jones, who scored 19 points and contributed significantly with 7 rebounds and 6 assists. The atmosphere was electric, with nearly 27,000 fans witnessing this historic moment.

Coach Royal Ivey highlighted the team’s resilience and determination, especially given their previous loss to Puerto Rico in the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Vice President Rebecca Nyadeng de, Mabior said cheers with the team at Juba International Airport this morning. She said the team’s performance has garnered attention and admiration globally, further solidifying South Sudan’s emerging status in international Basketball

Vice President encourage the team to keep the spirit, build up again to the upcoming tournament.

She compared the team with a soldiers with went to fight either to loss or win and the victory over Puerto Rico was a symbol of national pride for South Sudan.
