President Kiir calls for peace in the Great Lakes region, Horn of Africa

South Sudan President and Chair of East African Community (EAC) Salva Kiir Mayardit has called for a collective effort to promote peace in the Great Lakes region and the Horn of Africa.

President Kiir while addressing the African Union assembly reiterates the need to address conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan.

The 37th African Union summit was held in Addis Ababa -Ethiopia under the theme “Educate and Skill Africa for the 21st Century”.

The summit was convened by Heads of State and Governments from across Africa to discuss important matters impacting Africa and to plan the future course of development for the continent.

South Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. James Pitia Morgan said President Kiir also conducted sideline meetings with regional leaders on bilateral relations between South Sudan and the neighboring countries.

The President further appealed, in his capacity as the Chairperson of the East African Community bloc, to DRC, Rwanda, Somalia, and Ethiopia to address their disputes amicably to maintain peace in the Great Lakes region.

According to reports published on Sunday, February 18, 2024, on the President’s official page, Kiir also highlighted the progress Juba has made in the implementation of the revitalized agreement.

He said South Sudan is preparing for the forthcoming elections expected in December 2024. President Kiir reportedly noted the security challenges posed by the arms embargo.

Kiir returned to Juba on Monday, after intensive four days in the Ethiopian Capital, Addis Ababa and received by the First Vice president Dr. Riek Machar, national and state government officials.
