President Kiir urges donors to fund climate change projects

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has on Saturday urged the developed countries to consider financing projects that will tackle climate change affecting developing nations like South Sudan.

The President was speaking at the 28th UN Climate Change Summit and United Nations Convention on Climate Change which is ongoing in the United Arab Emirates and will end Next week on 12th December 2023.

This year’s COP28 summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates is said to have drawn together over 180 world leaders, policymakers, industry innovators, and environmental activists to work together towards a goal of fixing climate finance and ensuring it is affordable, available, and accessible.

The world leaders gathered to discuss Climate finance and formulate strategies to tackle climate change through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and protect the most vulnerable nations.

The office of the president reported that the leaders participating at the summit have endorsed the ‘COP28 UAE Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems, and Climate Action.

The Declaration confronts global emissions and protects the lives and livelihoods of farmers who are on the frontlines of climate change.

According to reports from the office of the president, Kiir has explained to the summit how South Sudan experienced the effects of climate change, such as severe flooding and drought which drastically affected the livelihood of many people in the country.

“I urge global partners to build the livelihood of people in the global South through capacity building to embark on green growth, the time for ambitious climate action is now” Kiir reiterated.

Official report indicates that South Sudan has ratified the Paris Agreement on climate change making South Sudan number 147 countries out of 193 nations to join a fight against global warming through reduction of carbon emission.
