The Director of the Association for Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS), Ms. Ayaa Irene Lokang is asking the newly graduated students from Media training to practice journalism in their respective states.
Irene said most students who completed the course never returned to their origin after graduating from the Media Development Institute.
“The only problem is that, whenever people come to study at MDI and they get access to be deployed within the town, they get to remain there, they don’t go back to the States.”
“We have about five students who came from the States and I hope that they will graduate and go back to their different media houses in the state to practice from there,” Irene said.
Gerry Allan the acting principal at MDI said the knowledge gained from the institute is to make a difference and bring change in society through the graduates.
Gerry believes the newly graduated students will make positive changes across the nation if they depart to the different states
“I am privileged and heartened to celebrate this special occasion with you as you graduate and join the communities where you live to make a difference and bring change. You have learned important problem-solving life skills and that will save you well in your career,” said Allan.
Meanwhile, the Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Darene Manning challenged the graduates to save the citizens with credible information. He said accurate reporting promotes informed decisions in society among the citizens.
“As a journalist, you are called to save your fellow citizens to provide credible and accurate news and information, a journalist is also to be dedicated to holding freedom of expression one of the most important rights that citizens hold in a democracy.“
The country director for Norwegian People’s Aid-NPA, Hilde Bergsma applauded the female students for joining journalism at MDI saying they will amplify the voice of women in the society
“We know that issues to women and girls are different and we know these eight new fresh journalists will be a better voice representing the female population.”
On Wednesday, the Media Development Institute graduated 23 students who completed one year of training in journalism.
