Kiir Returns from BRICS Summit with New Infrastructure Deal

Kiir and his delegation returned to Juba on Friday after attending the three day BRICS summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa

South Sudan President, Salva Kiir and his delegation have returned to Juba on Friday from the BRICS summit held in South Africa. 

The three-day BRICS summit held in Johannesburg is made up of countries which include; Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The three-day BRICS summit aimed to foster sustainable development, stimulate economic growth, and promote inclusive multilateral cooperation.

Speaking to the media at Juba International Airport, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Deng Dau Deng Malek said President Kiir has encouraged the leaders of the bloc to work together to achieve an inclusive financial system that supports infrastructural development.

The Acting Minister further stated that, while in Johannesburg, President Kiir witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with a Chinese company for the construction of the Nimule Dry Port.

According to Malek, the MoU is meant to improve the transportation of goods and transhumance and also reduce the cost of doing business in the region.

He said, “President Kiir witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with a Chinese company for the construction of the Nimule Dry Port.”

Deng also added that During the BRICS Summit, President Kiir and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki held a sideline meeting where the two leaders discussed diplomatic relations and matters of mutual interest, regional peace, and security, particularly the conflict in Sudan.

 Last month, the South Sudan President also attended a regional Summit in the Egyptian capital, Cairo where he proposed recommendations crucial to finding a comprehensive peaceful, and political settlement of conflict in Sudan.
