Three storey-building collapses in Juba

Santo Mapuor, an eyewitness said the uncompleted building which was still under construction collapsed on the people who were working inside the building. 

Mapuor estimated that at least ten people were working inside the storey building by the time it collapses, and seven people were rescued at the time. 

 Four of the rescued individuals were injured and were rushed to Giada Military Hospital, where one person identified as Peter was later reported dead. 

The eyewitnesses believe that there may be still more people trapped underground and plan to remove the rubbles are underway.

 However, despite efforts to remove the rubble of the collapsed building, the cause of the collapse storey building remains unknown.

The Acting Mayor of Juba City, Emmanuel Khemis Richard confirmed the incident, he further said it is a tragic and terrible incident.

The Acting Mayor said the remaining part of the building is going to be demolished to see if there are people trapped underground.

Emmanuel revealed that he is going to call for an urgent meeting with the South Sudan Council of Engineering and tasked them to see if all the buildings in the City have met the requirement to put up the structures.

Khemis also stated that the Juba City Council, State Ministry of Physical Infrastructure, and Council of Engineering will hold a meeting to ensure that all buildings are regulated.

The Acting mayor directed the security organs to track down the owner of the building and do proper investigation.

The mayor also ordered all tall building owners to submit their documents to the Office of the Mayor within 14 days quality check.

Mayor Khemis regretted the occurrence and promised to extend support to the families of the victims.

This tragic incident highlights the importance of building safety and the need for proper construction practices.
