The International Committee of the Red Cross has opened a new operation theatre facility at Ghiada Military Hospital in Juba.

The new operation theatre will be used to provide medical surgeries, particularly for weapon-wounded patients and other survivors of gun injuries.

Ghiada Military Hospital Theatre becomes the first operational facility built by ICRC in South Sudan since it started operating in the country in 1978 in the then Sudan.

The construction of the facility started in March 2022 and was completed more than a year later.

Addressing the media during the inauguration of the theatre, the Head of the ICRC delegation in Juba, Pierre Dorbes told the reporters that the facility would help the surgical team to improve the quality of services given to patients in South Sudan.

“We believe that this facility will improve the services provided to the patients including infectious control and transfer of weapon-wounded patients,” Dorbes stated,” he said.

The ICRC head pointed out that Surgeons in South Sudan often work in difficult environments performing difficult surgeries under pressure yet producing great results.

Pierre Dorbes said, “South Sudanese and ICRC surgeons often work in difficult conditions and still accomplish great results, performing difficult surgeries under pressure.”

The Head of the ICRC delegation in Juba believes that the facility will be a Centre for sharing knowledge among the South Sudanese surgeons and the ICRC medical team.

“We hope that this facility will also be used as a center for knowledge sharing that will empower South Sudanese medical staff in their difficult work,” he added.

The new facility would help to address the needs of the wounded patients entering the country from neighboring Sudan.

Juba Military Hospital is one of two surgical units in South Sudan supported by the ICRC, alongside the Akobo County Hospital in Jonglei State.
