The South Sudan Union of persons with disabilities (SSUPDO) urges the government to implement the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons living with Disabilities.

The Bill of rights was signed by President Kiir Salva on Friday. The Chairperson of the Union, Augustino Wudu said the signing of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities by the President demonstrates a political commitment.

He added that government should stick to its commitment by promoting and protecting the rights of persons living with abilities.

The Chairperson also pointed out that South Sudan obligates the government and other stakeholders to be inclusive in their institutional interventions.

“The signing of the UNCRPD by the President will contribute effectively to the promotion and protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities,” Wudu anticipated.

The leader of disabled persons stressed that persons living with disabilities are stakeholders in public governance affairs and therefore, government decisions must be inclusive regarding societal life or public affairs.

The South Sudan Union of Persons with Disabilities urges the society and government to ensure that all actions and decisions conform with the UNCRPD.

“We urge the society and the government to ensure that all their actions and decisions conform with UNCRPD. We want effective inclusion now in South Sudan,” he stressed.

Augustino Wudu, the Chair of the Union, however, expresses worries about the implementation of the UN Convention document that was signed by the President.

According to him, signing the document is one thing, and implementing it, is another therefore, he encourages the government and stakeholders to steadily implement the document as required by the UN Human Rights division.

The Chairperson reported that the bill was tabled to parliament in 2017 but later was reported to have gone missing.

However, after a thorough search with the help of some individuals, the document was traced and later found. It was not clear how the document went missing in the August House.

Ben Lou Poggo, the Director of Inclusive Education, and the former Chairperson of the Union say the signing of this document is a great move by the government of South Sudan.

He believes that when the government and the stakeholders implement what is in the document, the services that have not been delivered to persons living with disabilities will now be at the epic center.

Ben added that, with help of the UN Convention pact, the government will be in a position to provide services that will benefit Persons with Disabilities.

He said the convention allows Persons living with Disabilities to participate in the development of the country.

“As will be implemented by the government and various stakeholders, we believe that the services that had not been provided to the Persons with Disabilities will now take center stage,” Poggo stressed.

“So that person with disabilities will benefit and are not looked at as objects but human beings and given opportunities to participate in the development of the nation,” he added.

On Friday, 24th February 2023, President Salva Kiir signed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), a document that gives considerable privilege to persons living with deformities.
