South Sudan has signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Djibouti on opening a new trade route for the country. The agreement was signed to enable country access to the world market through the port.

Djibouti port becomes the third international sea trade route after Port Sudan and Mombasa for South Sudan to import and export goods regionally and globally.

South Sudan’s minister of petroleum, Hon. Puot Kang Chuol and the Ministry of Energy of the Djibouti signed a MoU on Tuesday during Oil and Power Conference held in Juba.

Hon. Kang says the agreement is an honor to the South Sudanese investors and other businesspersons.  He stressed that opening such trade routes will ease the importation and exportation of goods to and from other countries.

Mr. Kang, says the government is working hard to ensure that all the seasonal routes connecting to the ports are made passable.

“We are working with the ministry of roads and the Ministry of Finance to make sure that all the seasonal roads are passable whether in rain season or dry season,” Honorable Kang stated.

The minister also encourages the South Sudanese investors to utilize this opportunity to explore the business opportunities in Djibouti and not localize themselves in the country.

He says South Sudanese investors can do well in other countries when they explore such opportunities.

Kang urges the South Sudanese investors to stop the tendency of working against each other instead they should collaborate and consider the benefits that the citizens of this Country will get.

“You need to ask the fellow South Sudanese for the contracts because when that person gets the contract, the benefits come back to the country through taxes, services delivery, and employment.”

The Minister of energy and natural resources, Djibouti, Yonis Ali Guedi, affirms South Sudan to use Djibouti port and access the global market.

He says the Republic of Djibouti is now open to all South Sudanese investors and the whole East African region as they look forward to working together to achieve economic prosperity.

Minister Yonis says the land allocated for South Sudan in Djibouti is ready and waiting for the government of South Sudan so that they can hand it over to the leadership.

“Djibouti is now open to the East African market; we are waiting for all the South Sudanese investors. All the processes of land are complete and ready,” Minister Guide stressed.

In 2021, Djibouti was recognised as the top container port in Africa and 61st globally by the World Bank and IHS Markets latest global Container Port Performance Index.
