The Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) leaders has gathered in Tanzania city of Dar el Salaam for the 20th assembly.

The meeting is a forum to plan and share their joys and challenges while also developing a road map to unite as Shepherds to the people entrusted to their care.

The church leaders discussed the environmental impact on the integral development of the people of East Africa.

During the homily, Cardinal Louis Antonio Gokim Tagle says lack of care for the environment has created almost a division between the creation and human beings that made people helpless.

He urges the congregation members to proclaim the good news of coming together and to be close to God.

“The spirit of conversion is required by our biblical faith and is manifested in changing the way we think, communicate, prioritize, lifestyle and mindset which more often is seen in taking things for granted,” he said.

Cardinal Louis Antonio called on the participants to look at the root causes of what brings about environmental degradation because this will enable them to avoid creating discussions on the symptoms only.

He stressed that a lack of caring for the environment has manifested in the absence of caring for brothers and sisters, triggering conflict, violence, and Divisiveness.

Cardinal warns the people to be prepared for the necessary painful process of conversion that requires biblical faith.

“Let us be prepared for the necessary but often painful conversion process. The conversion required by biblical faith, a Conversion called for by the gospel, a conversion in lifestyle, priority, and communication in our mindset that we often take for granted. Cardinal Louis Antonio added.

Several Archbishops, Bishops, and delegates from the AMECEA countries and AMECEA Partners participated in the yearly assembly on Sunday and expected to end on 18th July 2022.

The AMECEA Plenary is an association of the Catholic Dioceses in the East Africa region in the person of the bishops who govern their respective Dioceses.
