Leaders are tasked to render services to people, but most of them aim at only holding on positions, says the Assistant Parish Priest of St Peter and Paul Cathedral in Torit, South Sudan.

Fr. David Taban says there are power disputes among South Sudan leaders, which does not fall in line with God’s teaching.

He adds that most leaders have failed to deliver basic services to the community.

“In our society, our communities where we live, leadership, power is what people rival for, brothers and sisters in the same family will struggle only for power. Someone wants to click into power, whether the services are rendered or not, I must click into power. Jesus said my kingship is to render services to our brothers and sister, there are people who climbed into leadership after the CPA was signed, what have they done as leaders at different capacities?, what have they done as being a minister, being a director, being a governor, being a president, being a vice president, being a, what have you done for all these”.

Fr Taban also blames political leaders for creating divisions among communities, instead of emphasizing on development.

“When you become an MP, what is your intention of becoming an MP? All these are all politics. People speak on a click only to climb a ladder, but once they climb the ladder, do they render services that they are supposed to render to the people? Let us be Christians and always let us be focused, as a leader, how do you allow yourself to be misled by people who are around you? In other areas there are no schools, even Arabs who have been in this country have built schools. Whether it was with an evil intention these schools have helped us, what about us who are black Southerners, what have you done, what services have you rendered to society? You only cause confusion among the people who lived for centuries as brothers and sisters our politicians insert rubbish in them”.

The Catholic Priest urges leaders to portray Jesus’ leadership, full of love, unity and peace, rather than wrangling for power without service delivery.

“There are some people who click into power, they even bring shame to their tribes because of what they are doing, when you get a majority of your own tribe into the system and the system is the system is not going ahead, then people will say look at this tribal system, does it end with you alone, or it condemn the all tribes where you come from that these people are so tribal look at them they are in the key positions but things are not moving. My dear brothers and sisters, Christ said His kingship is to portray love, unity and peace, today in our community, in Africa, leaders want to embraces power by having more arms, more weapons to protect them in order to click and to remain in power”.
