Daughters of Mary Immaculate or DMI in partnership with Food and Agricultural Organization or FAO on Monday launched a new project under the theme: ‘Grow your own vegetables’.

The project is to promote backyard gardening to improve nutrition status among vulnerable households

Minister for Agriculture and Food Security, Josephine Joseph Lagu said if the people of South Sudan take agriculture seriously in this country, children will have good health.

She encouraged people of South Sudan to focus on agriculture and avoid importing food items from neighbouring countries.

FAO Country representative Meshack Malo said they have about 1.3 million children in South Sudan who are malnourished because they have no enough food to eat.

He added that the project will be able to help the vulnerable people in order to get something for survival.

Meanwhile Gift Emmanuel, one of the beneficiaries, said she has taken three years with DMI and is able to apply the knowledge to feed her family.

She encouraged the people of South Sudan to work hard to produce food for local consumption and surplus for the market for development of the country.
