The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General appreciates Japan Engineering Contingent for professional work in the Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS.
David Shearer says Japanese engineers reliable services were essential for UNMISS to protect civilians and deliver humanitarian aid.
He adds that the Contingent’s professionalism, discipline and dedication to the people of South Sudan impressed him.
The head of UNMISS testifies that Japan engineers played an important role during periods of insecurity in December 2013 and July 2016 in Juba.
He recognizes that the engineers worked in challenging conditions to construct and maintain Juba-Yei, Juba-Yambio, Juba-Bor and Juba-Torit highways.
The UNMISS Chief thanks Japan for generous donations to the Mission in South Sudan and that the equipment will be used to support its future operations.
He says Japan’s International Cooperation Agency assurances to continue contributing to UNMISS through deploying staff officers encouraged him.
Shearer hopes the deployment continues and Japan increases the number of peacekeepers in UN future operations.
