Juba market survey shows continuous rise in costs of food items

Since the devaluation of South Sudanese Pounds by 84 percent in December 2015, the cost of living in Juba has been worsening every day, a survey shows.
 
Local food sellers alongside Juba streets tell CRN in an interview that a ration of meat is sold at 50 Pounds.
 
Before the currency devaluation, it was sold at 20 South Sudanese Pounds.
 
A plate of rice with beans now costs 30 South Sudanese Pounds, but it used to be ten Pounds, a food seller explains.
 
A mixed ration of meat, vegetables and posho now cost 50 Pounds, he says.
 
A tray of eggs is now sold at 145 or 150 South Sudanese Pounds, says a seller of food in Juba Town.
 
But, it used to cost 25 South Sudanese Pounds, he adds.

In standard restaurants of Juba City, the costs of meals are more than double as compared to the sub-standard restaurants alongside streets.
 
The exchange rate of one US Dollar against the local currency is at 40 South Sudanese Pounds in the black market.
