The International Committee of the Red Cross says hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese face severe food shortages.

There is an alarming hunger situation due to fighting in the country, says Juerg Eglin, the Head of Delegation for ICRC in South Sudan.

The level of hunger is severe and medical needs are high, the ICRC head says.

The official says the agency is trying to help by improving access to food and health care.

The humanitarian consequences of conflict remain extremely worrying, though the peace agreement has been signed, Eglin says.

Many people are separated from their loved ones and millions are desperately hoping to return to their homes, the official remarks.
