The Nuba Mountains’ Agriculture Director instructed people in the SPLM-N controlled areas to stop random cutting of trees for domestic use to preserve the environment.
Speaking to Radio Voice of Peace on Thursday, Rama Kabashi Kodi, says a lot of trees were cut in Heiban County for charcoal use, warning that the activity may lead to lack of rain and desertification in the future if not stopped.
He enlightened people that trees act as windbreak agents during the rainstorm, telling them not to cut down trees that bear fruits for consumption.
The Director said lawbreakers would face one year imprisonment and a fine of 500 Sudanese Pounds.
Mr Kabashi called on citizens to avoid setting fire in bushes which usually destroys forests which help in the provision of oxygen and absorption of carbon dioxide.
Earlier in the beginning of this year’s rainy season, there was delay in the rainfall in many parts of the Nuba Mountains was blamed on reduction of forests.
