Save the Children warns that South Sudan mothers are likely to die due to the current crisis that caused displacement, poverty and severely affected access to healthcare.
In a statement on Tuesday Save the Children reports that the young nation’s maternal mortality rate is the worst in the world and that it comes 159 out of 179 countries ranked for where best to be a mother.
It adds that a child is more likely to die in the young country before seeing his or her fifth birthday, while a girl to die during childbirth than completing primary education.
Save the Children Country Director Peter Walsh stresses the urgent need to close the gap in life chances for mothers and children to have a fair chance to survive.
He cautions that if South Sudan is to complete the task of ending preventable child and maternal deaths, it has to find better ways of getting health care to all population around the country.
The Country Director calls on South Sudan leaders to put the health need of mothers and children at the top of their agenda and make universal quality health care a reality.
