AMDISS says censorship alarmingly increasing in South Sudan

The Association of Media Development in South Sudan or AMDISS Chairman reports that censorship is increasing at alarming rate in the country.
 
Alfred Taban while addressing the World Press Freedom Day celebration on Monday in Juba under the theme: ‘Let journalism thrive; towards better reporting, gender, equality and safety in the digital age’, says journalist fear to report critical peace and security issues due to pressure from the authority, Radio Bakhita reported.
 
He notes that the media climate deteriorated since the outbreak of the crisis in mid December 2013.
 
Union of Journalists of South Sudan or UJOSS Chairperson says they closely work with AMDISS and other partners to increase professional skills of media practitioners to meet the international journalism market.
 
He calls on the national government to ensure the implementation of the media laws to create reporters’ helpful environment and avoid harassments, intimidations, arrests of journalists and confiscation of newspapers.
 
The World Press Freedom Day celebration with a two-day conference brought together 200 participants from all states, Media Institute of Southern Africa, Media Council of Kenya, Uganda Journalists Union, Gurtong Media Owner based in UK, Sherry Ricchiardi, PhD award-winning journalist and media development specialists.
