Government Spokesperson on Monday clarified that cabinet decision to extend its term of office and that of the National Legislature for two years remains a proposal subject to approval or disapproval by the two houses.

Michael Makuei Lueth told journalists that the proposed amendments on the constitution would only be effective if the National Legislature adopted and President Salva Kiir Mayardit signed.

He also clarified that the cabinet resolution on adjourning 2015 general elections and extending its lifespan for two years was political decision transforms into legal one after blessing by the legislature.

The Spokesperson explained that the constitutional procedure if elections were to take place, the current government would be dissolved by end of March and establish caretaker regime until the elected government is installed.

Cabinet Affairs Minister Dr Martin Elia Lomurö dismissed reports that the cabinet decision to call off elections was due to external pressure or court suit by opposition political parties.

He argued that if they were succumbing to foreign pressure, President Salva Kiir Mayardit would have resigned as demanded by some international actors.
