The National Legislative Assembly on Monday passed a recommendation for the removal of Lakes State Governor Matur Chut Dhuol.
The unanimous recommendation followed reports’ presentation by Defence, Interior and National Security Ministers summoned before the Assembly to explain security situation in the troubled Lakes State.
After lengthy deliberations reflecting support for the governor’s removal and some sort of reservations from others, Speaker Manasseh Magok Rundial announced the passing of the recommendation before the Augus House amidst thunderous applause of approval.
National Security Minister Isaac Obuto Mamur Mete told the parliament there is lack of control and unity within the state leadership, coupled with the culture of complicating matters to avoid justice.
He recommended removal of the governor as the first step, followed by strategic disarmament of the belligerent mentality and arms as the lasting solution.
Defence Minister Kuol Manyang Juuk explained to the Assembly that Lakes State security is worsening, recording over 300 deaths including women in the last four months.
He said the cause of the insecurity included cattle rustling and vicious revenge attacks among communities worsened by heavy armament from undisclosed source.
Deputy Interior Minister Jadallah Augustino Wani told the Augus House that Lakes State’s security situation is exceptional.
He decried limited armed forces compared to 80 percent armed civil population, urging politicians and traditional leaders to forge healing and reconciliation to avoid what he termed ‘cancer’ from engulfing the nation.
