Director says war contributed to low girls’ enrolment

Central Equatoria Education Director said the 21-year civil war and the mid December crisis in the country were factors that contributed to low girls’ enrolment in primary and secondary schools.
 
Amos Longa Modi said cultural beliefs of some communities were other difficulties that greatly affected girls’ education at all levels, Bakhita Radio reported.
 
He urged the warring parties in the country to stop fighting, urging parents to change their attitudes to enable girls go to school.
 
Juba City Mayor Christopher Sarafino Wani urged legislators in the country to enact laws that protect girls and encourage them to continue with their education.
 
The leaders made their remarks at Juba One Primary School while celebrating Girl Education Day under the theme: ‘Educating girls for participation in the development of South Sudan’.
 
The occasion brought together many girls from different schools within Juba who presented educative songs, poems and dramas.
