Catholic Bishops of the Association Members of Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa or AMECEA eighteenth plenary in Lilongwe, Malawi concluded by writing two letters to Presidents of South Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit and Sudan Omar Hassan Al Bashir to bring relative peace to the two countries.
Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference or SCBC Secretary-General Fr Jacob Odwa told CRN on Friday that the letters contain a central message of making peace by abandoning selfish interests for the welfare of poor suffering citizens.
He said the letters cited lack of peace manifested by ongoing conflict in South Sudan and wars in Nuba Mountains, Blue Nile, Darfur and other areas of the Sudan.
Fr Odwa said he admired the spirit of cooperation between the Malawian government and the church to promote Christianity and nationalism.
He said it could be a good new idea to apply in South Sudan and Sudan for religious leaders and politicians to participate together in the church development.
The SCBC Secretary-General revealed that AMECEA plenary would be conducted after every four years unlike the previous three years schedule.
Fr Odwa said AMECEA resolved to convene the next plenary in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia or Tanzania after four years and that South Sudan or Sudan is expected to host it after ten years from 2014.
