Activist calls for non-human compensation

Human rights activists in Eastern Equatoria appreciated Seger peace agreement, calling for cash or animal compensation, not human beings as blood payment.
 
State Women Association Vice Chairperson Davidica Ikai described the cash or cattle compensation for killing as a positive achievement, Emmanuel Radio reported.
 
She commended Nyong Community Chairperson Eddie William for accepting to follow compensation with cows, promising that civil society organizations would support him to ensure payment is not done inform of human beings.
 
The Former chairperson of Civil Society Network Jimmy Killang criticized the practice of girl child compensation, demanding prosecution of suspects for crimes committed.
 
He urged the state government to take action against people using girl child for blood compensation for justice to prevail, saying compensation should be the last option.
 
State Member of Parliament representing Torit County Flora Iliha said girl child compensation was an old practice that should not be used today.
 
Standing against the traditional practice, Iliha said anybody who offers or receive a child should face the law.
 
The Seger peace agreement was signed between Murahatiha and Tirangore communities on Saturday to end series of revenge killings since 2005.
 
Recent spur of the revenge culminated to killing of at least ten people in two weeks time this month.
