Oxfam warned that appeals to fund the aid effort are failing and South Sudan’s humanitarian crisis is escalating out of control with malnutrition and sickness rising as many people were forced to flee their homes.
Oxfam’s Chief Executive Mark Goldring in a statement on Wednesday said the worst humanitarian catastrophe descends into more misery and that they would fail to avert a famine if funds do not start arriving soon to help IDPs at risk of starvation, disease and violence.
He added that aid effort is stumbling and Oxfam would not cope without a timely injection of funds.
Mr Golring explained that in Upper Nile, Unity and Jonglei States child malnutrition rates are rising, thousands of people, many malnourished arrived at the UN camp in Bentiu in the last few weeks and that in six weeks 100 children died in the camp.
He lamented that in the UN camp in Malakal and Bor people are living in atrocious conditions and are walking knee deep in mud and stagnant water which increase the risk of diseases.
Chief Golring said fighting in Upper Nile is seriously hampering the aid effort and in Jonglei over 400 thousand were forced to flee their homes.
He called for generous international help to avert a famine and further suffering.
